College basketball and March Madness

College basketball has a broad regular-season schedule followed by conference tournaments and the NCAA championships. From 2027, both the men's and women's Division I tournaments expand from 68 to 76 teams. An Opening Round reduces each field to 64 before the familiar knockout bracket continues.

Markets on one NCAA game do not depend on how far the team advances in the tournament. An outright selection, by contrast, remains open until the team is eliminated or wins the championship. What do minus 5.5 and over 219.5 mean?

Basketball handicap betting adjusts the final score by the points shown beside each team. If a favourite is listed at minus 5.5, it needs to win by at least six points. The opposing team at plus 5.5 can win outright or lose by no more than five points.

Half-point spreads prevent the adjusted result from finishing level. A whole-number line can produce a tie after the handicap is applied, often called a push. The settlement rules explain whether the stake is returned or another condition applies.

A total does not require you to choose the winner. If the line is 219.5 points, an over selection needs at least 220 combined points. An under selection succeeds at 219 or fewer. Team totals use the same principle for one side, while player totals apply it to a named statistic.

Does overtime count in basketball betting?

Overtime commonly counts in full-game moneyline, spread and total markets, but the wording attached to the selection takes priority. A market labelled regulation time, 40 minutes or 48 minutes can stop before overtime.

Quarter and first-half markets cover only the stated period. Player props may include overtime when they apply to the full game, although participation and settlement rules still need to be checked. Two selections involving the same player can therefore settle differently if one covers the game and the other a named quarter.

What happens to the odds after tip-off?

In-play prices react to the score, time remaining, possession, fouls, timeouts and changes in the expected pace. A team leading comfortably can shorten in the match-winner market while the total continues to move according to how many possessions and scoring opportunities remain.

Markets may be suspended during a timeout, video review, free throws or another important passage of play. If the price changes after you select it, the updated figure appears in the bet slip before you decide whether to proceed. Check the game clock, score and market period together, especially when betting on a quarter or the next scoring outcome.
